Researching, preserving, and amplifying the legacy of Asian Americans in Dallas

Maria Carlina Doromal

March 16, 2022 · Category: People

[CW: Rape, Violence, Murder]

Maria Carlina Doromal was a 26-year-old Filipina nurse who had been in the United States since December of 1979.

On July 18, 1980, roommates discovered her dead body in their Dallas apartment near Bachman Lake. Police said “she had been beaten, raped, and stabbed in the throat.”

Police arrested Michael Wayne Hicks, age 20, for questioning in her murder. He was also a suspect in eight rapes, five robberies, and six burglaries.

Carlina was “quiet, unobtrusive, and thorough in her work,” according to the nursing administrator of her hospital, “She was very pleasant with the patients and had a lot of interaction with the cancer patients and their families. Pain is something that cancer patients often have to deal with. Very often they need someone to talk with and help be a sounding board. She was a good listener.”
