Despite killer’s racist content targeting Indian women among other groups, local law enforcement downplays role of targeted racism and hate in the devastating mass shooting
May 12, 2023 — On Monday, May 15 at 3 p.m. CT, three Texas-based groups —Asian Texans for Justice, the Dallas Asian American Historical Society, and the SAAVETX Education Fund — will host a press briefing regarding the horrific mass shooting last week at a Texas mall that left eight people dead and seven people wounded. Four of the people killed were Asian or Asian American, and the majority of those injured and slain were people of color. The killer was found to have posted extremist, violent neo-Nazi and right-wing content, with particularly hateful animus toward Asian women, including Indian women. One of the victims was a young woman from India.
In the briefing, speakers representing AAPI and BIPOC communities of Texas, will make the following demands:
The Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement provide the public with more timely and accurate information
A full and thorough investigation by local and federal officials to determine if this was a racially motivated hate crime
Swift action on gun safety reform at the federal, state, and local levels
Press is also welcome to attend a subsequent community vigil that will take place at 7 p.m. CT, at Union Coffee (3705 Cedar Springs Rd Dallas, Texas 75219).
